Cookies, cakes, pudding, pies, ice cream, creamy drinks, egg nog… Yep, the holidays are sure filled with some delicious sweets that are not as nutritious as we’d like them to be.

If you’re anything like us, then you’re totally looking forward to grandma’s holiday shortbread (you know the classic recipe that has that maraschino cherry in the center?), but you may also know that after 1 too many of grandma’s shortbread cookies (as good as they are) sometimes it’s just nice to lighten up the sweets with some delicious and healthy dessert recipes!

We’ve been working hard at trying to remove the guilt associated with food, and that’s why the last couple holiday seasons have been a lot less stressful, because we allow ourselves the shortbread, stuffing and all the fine things that come with the holidays. But we also know the holidays can be packed full of food, and we feel the best when we enjoy those things, while enjoying healthier fare as well. 

By listening to our bodies we now know that too much stuffing or too many shortbread cookies are going to make our bellies ache, and our brain fog, so having healthier dessert recipes in our back pockets for those days where we feel like we need to find that balance is awesome, not to mention they taste really amazing!

1. Vegan Minty Chocolate Mousse


This Mint Chocolate Mousse is one of our favourite delicious and healthy dessert recipes that takes minutes to make (albeit you need to let it set for a few hours in the fridge). Because it contains full-fat coconut milk it makes for an incredibly rich and creamy chocolate dessert, which means you only need a couple bites to feel totally satisfied. We recommend making this dessert in shot glasses or very small cups, with a dollop of vegan whipped cream and some crushed candy cane! Find the recipe here.

2. Grain & Gluten-free Classic Peanut Butter Cookies


We’re hooked on peanut butter cookies, especially during the holiday season. These peanut butter cookies are made completely grain and gluten-free, and contain 6 simple ingredients like natural peanut butter, egg, coconut sugar and vanilla.

One of our newfound favourite recipe, these grain-free and paleo Butter-less Vegan Butter Tarts are simply divine! We really went out of our way to create a healthier version of the classic butter and sugar loaded butter tart in a much healthier way, as long as it still tastes like the latter. This healthy and delicious dessert recipe is going to replace the classic butter tart that’s always being passed around during the holidays. We swear!

4. Cool & Refreshing Raw Lemon Cheesecake Squares


Okay, so this delicious and incredibly healthy recipe for these Raw Lemon Cheesecake Squares aren’t a classic lemon meringue pie, but trust us when we say that this recipe is going to put lemon meringue pie to shame. Well, maybe not shame, because lemon meringue is so delicious, but this recipe is also pretty darn amazing. Tastes just like meringue flavour, but a blend between a frozen dessert and a cheesecake as well. These raw lemon bars are out of this world.

5. Chocolate Hazelnut Bliss Balls


You know how you always get a pack of Ferrero Rocher chocolates during the holidays? It’s inevitable over here, hubs loves them! We love them too, but we’ve also been diving into these Chocolate Hazelnut Bliss Balls that taste just like a healthier version of Ferrero Rocher. These chocolate balls are loaded with hazelnut flavour, but sweetened with dates. A perfect post-dinner healthy dessert recipe that you only need a couple bites of to feel satisfied.

    The cacao dusted caramel balls sound very interesting. I am not a lover of dates but reading the ingredients they sound good. I would definately try them

      Gail, yes they’re delicious. The dates blended with the coconut taste different. You can cover them all in melted chocolate instead of just powdered cacao and they will have a more chocolatey taste. Enjoy 🙂
