We don’t know about you guys, but for us the best part of the cake or cupcake is the frosting! Do you agree?
So rich, creamy, sweet and incredibly delicious. You can do so many different flavous, and it really does make or break a cake or cupcake. Just imagine it without frosting, oh my.
Not that there’s anything wrong with diving into a classic piece of cake, especially when you are enjoying yourself at a party or a night out. However, now that one of us over here is a mom, finding new and creative ways to get veggies into our diets (as well as our kiddos) is a mission!
When there’s a will, there’s a way to make a recipe a little bit more nutrient dense, and a little less sugar-packed.
Trust us when we say, you are going to want to try this Healthy Chocolate Sweet Potato Icing. Betty Crocker and your corn syrup, polysorbate 60, artificial flavors and colors, move your butt over and get out of the way. This recipe is SO unbelievably simple, and tastes so much better, lady! We’re totally in for this chocolate icing made with sweet potatoes.
HEALTHY 4 INGREDIENT CHOCOLATE SWEET POTATO FROSTING
It’s really not the fact that this healthy chocolate sweet potato frosting is made with a vegetable, or no refined sugars and additives. You know what our favorite thing about this recipe is?
IT’S SO EASY TO MAKE!
Essentially all you have to do is steam sweet potatoes, add them plus the other 3 ingredients to a blender and blend until it’s creamy and smooth.
Did we say it was easy?
This sweet potato frosting recipe has minimal ingredients, can be made in your blender, contains vegetables (which no one would EVER know, trust us, we don’t tell anyone how it’s made), and is incredibly chocolatey and delicious. How could it not be a win?
It’s the perfect healthy alternative, and you can sneak veggies in while you’re at it.

Healthy Chocolate Sweet Potato Icing
4 ingredients, vegetables, no refined sugar, what more could you ask for from a chocolate icing?
- 2 cups orange sweet potato
- 1 cup cacao powder
- 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- Optional: liquid stevia until desired sweetness levels
- Cook sweet potato until extremely soft.
- When sweet potato is cool, combine sweet potato, cocoa, honey, stevia vanilla and salt.
- Blend until smooth.
- Refrigerate for 15 minutes before icing.
Makes approximately 1 1/2 cups of icing.
Optional: liquid stevia until desired sweetness levels Makes approximately 1 ½ cups of icing.

Hello Caroline, Ops! Maple syrup, brown rice syrup or any type of sweetener should work including regular sugar. You may need to adjust the quantity to your taste. Did you try it? How did it turn out?
Can i use cocoa powder instead?
Hi! I have been searching for a healthy frosting recipe–not laden with refined sugar. This looks like a good and yummy possibility. However, I’m wondering: is this frosting thick enough to pipe and hold its shape? I’m making a teddy bear cake (using a Wilton teddy bear specialty cake pan I’ve had for 30 years!) for my granddaughter’s 2nd birthday and I need to be able to pipe stars with chocolate frosting.
I tried this, I only used 2/3cup of cocoa and even that was WAY too much.
Couldn’t hide that overly powder taste.
Thats a shame because I was hoping to out these on top of zucchini chocolate slice to make it the ultimate healthy treat
