Do you make your own spice mixes, or do you buy pre-packed ones?
Whether you choose one or the other, spices enhance the taste of your meals and bring out the flavour in your food. It’s the deciding factor between a bland and boring meal and something rich, flavourful and delicious.
We love to use a combination of spices in our kitchens and add to meals like stews, soups, meats and fish, or even salad dressings.
But all in all, making your own spice mixes tends to be a healthier choice then store bought, because a) you know what’s going in it, and b) you can avoid harmful additives, preservatives, and chemicals.
HOMEMADE SPICE MIXES ARE ALSO BENEFICIAL BECAUSE:
They limit the harmful effects of cooking methods. Certain cooking methods and foods naturally produce harmful substances called food mutagens. Examples include: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) produced from burned, overcooked, well-done meats and BBQ’s; and Acrylamide formed from frying, toasting and burning of starch-rich foods like potatoes and bread. However, marinating the food or adding anti-oxidant her and spice mixes greatly reduces their harmful effects on our body.
Help minimize gas and Bloating. If you experience a lot of stomach upset or gas, cumin is the perfect addition to your meal as it helps to relieve bloating and even diarrhea. It posses anti-cancer, anti-bacterial and little known blood sugar balancing properties. Cumin is also anti-fungal and that helps to preserve your food for longer.
They add flavour and feeling of satiety. Have you noticed that when you eat out, food is mostly flavoured with salt or MSG that leaves you craving more, bloated and thirsty? Because, the flavours in this mix are so aromatic and satisfying you do not need to use as much salt and their taste will leave you satisfied without the bloat.
