Actually, this recipe for vegan peppermint truffles came out of a desire for having an easy dessert to make for an upcoming pop-up Christmas market that I’m involved in.
I needed something that when it was sitting out for awhile didn’t lose its structure, or melt (which a lot of vegan desserts do), and something that was really easy to prep.
Also, holiday style, of course.
Hello Candy Cane Vegan Peppermint Truffles!
These vegan peppermint truffles could not be easier. They are made with a simple 4 ingredients, dark chocolate chips, warmed up coconut milk, peppermint extract and candy cane.
Who knew that adding crushed candy canes to chocolate would be so awesome?!
It creates a really nice crunchy texture with the smooth chocolate, and then rolling the truffles in chopped up candy cane, post-truffle roll makes for a fun, inviting and really delicious holiday treat.
The only thing I would recommend when it comes to buying candy canes, is to look for ones that contain no artificial flavours, colours, and no high-fructose corn syrup, which most traditional candy canes contain.
I picked up these vegan, organic and naturally sweetened candy canes from Wholesome and Amazon here, or you can head down to your local health food shop and see if they have any in store. I find that a lot of these companies keep healthier candy canes available during the holiday season. However, they are a little bit pricier, but they are well worth it!
Minimal ingredients, less prep, healthier alternative – what else do you need?
Look, I think that the holidays are filled with plenty of candy to go around. I am in no way shape or form saying that these vegan peppermint truffles are crazy healthy. I mean, they are better for you, less sugar, less ingredients, less processed nonsense than their holiday candy counterpart.
However, they are still a treat, and that’s okay.
I am all for enjoying the holidays by listening to your body’s needs and not depriving yourself. And, it doesn’t hurt showing up to a holiday party, with a healthier sweet treat that is gluten, dairy, grain and basically allergy-free, yet, still pretty tasty and amazing.
I find that bringing my own desserts to parties is always a great idea because a) everyone likes desserts, and hosts don’t usually feel put out if you show up with a sweet dish, and b) you can suit a dessert to your needs.
For me, I can usually get by finding dairy and grain-free food during the holidays. Between salads, meat and side dishes I am okay in that department. It’s usually the heavy cream, sugar and wheat that really gets my gut going, so bringing something I know will keep me feeling A okay, well no one could oppose to that.

Candy Cane Coated Vegan Peppermint Truffles (4 ingredients)
- 225 grams dark chocolate chips 1 package
- 1/2 cup full-fat coconut milk canned
- 1/2 tsp peppermint extract
- 1/2 cup candy cane chopped
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- Place chocolate chips in a large bowl.
- Heat the coconut milk in a sauce pan until boiling hot.
- Add the hot milk to the chocolate chips. The chips should start to melt.
- If they don’t fully melt, you can warm up another 2 Tbsp milk and add to the chocolate chips.
Once everything is melted and combined, add 1/4 cup chopped candy canes, mint extract and sea salt.
- Important step: let this sit in the fridge for 1-2 hours, checking on it every 20 minutes or so. You will want the texture to be cool enough to harden, but soft enough to still roll.
- Once you get it to a point you can easily roll, roll into small balls and then roll further in the chocolate chips. Set in fridge another hour to sit.
